Engagement Rings on a Budget
One way to save money on an engagement ring is to purchase a ring online as jewelry is often less expensive on the Internet. This situation occurs because online jewelers do not have to pay for store rental space, employee salaries, insurance, and so on. Additionally, you are not responsible for sales tax if you purchase your item from out of state (as of right now). Consequently, with the tax savings alone you can easily save $150 to $300.
However, did you know that you can purchase engagement rings that can make the diamond or other gem look bigger?
For example, if you choose a ring with an illusion setting, a mirror-like plate, the stone will look much bigger than it is. Many vintage rings are actually set in this type of setting. However, if repairs are needed down the line, the repairs can be more expensive.
Additionally, a setting with a cluster of jewels on either side of the main stone can give the ring more style.
You may want to consider purchasing a diamond or other gem in other shapes other than the traditional round shape. Diamonds in oval, marquise, or pear shapes do appear to be larger than their round counterparts of equal weight.
Pave settings also do tend to make the eye believe that there are more and larger diamonds on rings. Pave settings, themselves, are settings that give the appearance of a continuous row of diamonds. However, this setting is actually made of small diamonds with small holes beside each diamond. Each of these small holes gives the illusion of a diamond. However, it is important to keep in mind that some pave settings are quite expensive.
Another choice to give the illusion of a larger diamond or gem is to choose a jewel in a bezel setting. A bezel setting is basicly a setting in which a jewel is surrounded by a metallic rim. For diamonds, a rim made of white gold or platinum can enhance the color of a diamond. It may be unwise though to choose yellow gold in this type of setting as the yellow gold may give your precious diamond an unwanted yellowish hue.
