Earrings - History Throughout history and today, earrings have been worn by various cultures throughout the world. It is a well documented fact that the ancient Egyptians and Greeks alike adorned themselves with eye-catching earrings. In the 1800s and 1900s, even male sailors pierced an earlobe as it symbolized great sailing experience. As an added benefit, they believed that the pierced lobe increased their long-distance sight!
In the United States though, it was popular to have pierced ears until clip-on earrings replaced this trend in the 1920s. However, during the 1960s, the tide turned once again, and pierced ears fell into favor.
