Of the precious metals, platinum is the more popular and more expensive choice for engagement rings.  It is thought of as being rare – 10 tons of platinum must be mined to produce one ounce of platinum, whereas three tons of gold must be mined to produce one ounce of gold.

Why is Platinum a Practical Choice for Engagement Rings?

Rings constructed from platinum are extremely durable, as platinum does not splinter or chip easily at all, and doesn't tarnish when exposed to the environment.

Due its high density, platinum is also extremely well suited for holding expensive diamonds in place.  In fact, the famous Hope Diamond is set in platinum.  Another practical aspect to platinum is that only a small percentage of the metal actually contains other metal alloys.

What should you keep in mind when purchasing a platinum engagement ring?

Only jewelry pieces that contain 950 parts platinum per thousand can be labeled as a true platinum ring.   If the ring contains platinum at levels less than this specific benchmark, the retailer in question must state how much platinum is actually in that particular ring.

For instance, the ring must be marked with a figure that states 900Pt or 850Pt.  Rings that contain less than 850 parts platinum per thousand must specify what other platinum group metal is present in the jewelry.  For instance, the jewelry may contain Rhodium, Iridium, Ruthenium, Osmium and Palladium.  Ie - 750Pt200Irid.

In addition, always ensure that the ring is also stamped by the manufacturer to guarantee the authenticity of the ring.
