Cabochon Cut
Another popular cut that has been around for some time is the cabochon cut. Cabochon cuts are usually reserved for jewels that are opaque or semitransparent. This cabochon style basically consists of a smooth domed or rounded surface that does not possess any individual facets. Additionally, there are a variety of different shapes that cabochon cuts can come in.
Some of these shapes include the common round and oval shapes, but amazingly, cabochons can also come in triangular, square, and octagonal cuts. However, the height of this “dome” can vary from cabochon to cabochon, and some of the types of cabochons that are available include the hollow cabochon cut, the single cabochon cut, the double cabochon cut, the mixed cabochon cut and the tallow top cabochon cut. Some of the more popular gemstones to have cabochon cuts include opals, onyx, turquoise, moonstone, and cat's-eye. The height of the rounded surface does vary from cabochon to cabochon.
