European Cut
Before the brilliant cut was invented, the most common cut used was the European cut or old European cut. As a result, if you are looking into antique or vintage jewelry, you may come across this particular cut. Similar to the popular brilliant cut, the European cut differs in that it does not reflect as much light as the brilliant cut.
To be more specific, the facet on the top of a gem (also known by jewelers as “the table”) cut in the European style is much smaller than the brilliant cut stone. Additionally, the upper part of gemstone’s that are cut in the European style have a much heavier “crown”, which is the upper section of a jewel, than a gemstone with a brilliant cut.
