June’s Birthstone: Pearl
Pearls are formed when a particle or other irritant enters an oyster’s shell. As a defense mechanism, the oyster releases a substance that surrounds the object. The end result, of course, is the formation of a luminous pearl.
Pearls do come in a variety of shapes and sizes. However, large round pearls are the most rare type of pearls, and consequently these type of pearls are also the most expensive ones.
Pearls can be found in Asia, the South Pacific, and in the United States.
