May’s Birthstone: Emerald
Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May. Emeralds are prized for their vibrant green color. In fact, the word “emerald” comes from the Greek word "smaragdos" which means … not surprisingly … green stone.
Unlike almost every other jewel, natural emeralds contain small deposits of iron or inclusions.
However, these inclusions do not decrease the value of the stone. Instead, the inclusions are proof that the emerald is in fact “real” and not an imitation. That said, flawless emeralds are extremely rare, and usually are only found in the smallest of stones.
Emeralds can be found in the countries of Brazil, Colombia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
