February’s Birthstone: Amethyst
Amethyst is February’s traditional birthstone. Amethyst is a variety of quartz and ranges in color from a very deep purple to softer shades of lilac. The most prized color for amethysts is a deep medium purple with flashes of rose in the heart of the amethyst.
An extremely durable and pretty stone, this abundant gem can be found in the jewels of royalty throughtout history and cultures because of its rich purple color. Leonardo Da Vinci even wrote that amethyst had the ability to dissipate evil thoughts and make people more intelligent.
Amethysts are mined in Brazil, Canada, Uruguay, and Zambia.
