Diamond Cuts

The cut of a diamond is extremely important to both the overall appearance and the overall value of a diamond. When we refer to cut, we are referring to the symmetry, proportions and the “finish” of a diamond. Overall, a diamond with a good cut or “make” (as they say in the diamond industry) will have a bright, well balanced, and fiery disposition. In addition, the light should beautifully reflect off one facet to another facet … with the light eventually dispersing through the top (or table) of the diamond. Conversely, if a diamond is poorly cut, the light striking the facets of a diamond will “spill out” from either the bottom or sides of the diamond instead of reflecting back to the onlooker. The result? A rather dull looking diamond.

However, it is important to keep in mind that since the “cut” is the only 4 C characteristic that can be manipulated by humans, it is commonly acknowledged that a well-cut diamond can work wonders for an otherwise basic diamond. For instance, with an outstanding cut, a diamond can appear to have a higher clarity rating and even appear to have a greater carat weight as well – quite the feat indeed!
