Diamond Color

The color of a diamond is another important factor to consider when you are shopping for this prized gemstone. According to jewelers in-the-know, the best color for a diamond is a diamond with no color whatsoever. However, in reality, a diamond with no trace of color is something that rarely occurs naturally. As such, the various hues or colors that are present in a diamond can either enhance or diminish the value of that diamond. For instance, diamonds with intense pink or blue coloring are considered to be extremely desirable on the diamond market, whereas diamonds with a yellow hue are less desirable. As a direct result, the prices of these different diamonds vary considerably with the pink or blue tinged diamonds commanding the higher prices.

To address this important issue of color in diamonds, the GIA has created a helpful system that rates the degree of color present in these jewels. Diamonds are given ratings from "D" to "Z", with crystal clear diamonds getting a rating designation of “D”, and diamonds with clear light brown or yellow coloration getting a “Z” rating designation. Diamonds in the “D” to “F” range are considered to be the most transparent (and the most valuable due to rarity) whereas diamonds in the “G” to “F” range are warmer in color, but are less desirable to their lack of rarity. Of course, there are also diamonds that have rich, intense colors which are often referred to as "fancy" diamonds. These type of diamonds are extremely rare though … and you guessed it … much more costly.
